The Court OfYuletide Timing

When Can I Start Playing Christmas Music?

The day after Thanksgiving. You can decorate from November 1st, but the music waits until the turkey's gone.

This is the Court's strictest ruling, and it's strict for a reason. You can hang every ornament you own, because an ornament stays where you put it. Music doesn't. Once it starts, it's in the car, the store and the dentist's office for five straight weeks, and there are only so many songs. It needs to pace itself, and so do you.

That means no exceptions for the car. Yes, the Court has heard the argument that the windows were up. If someone spots you singing at a red light in the second week of November, you weren't yawning, and everybody knows it. Decorate in silence, like a professional. Put on a podcast. It'll make the first song on that Friday hit a lot harder.

From the day after Thanksgiving, you can play it wherever you've got the right to play anything: your house, your garage, your yard if the neighbors have had fair warning. Radio stations that flip to all Christmas before Thanksgiving are outside this Court's jurisdiction, though it has written them a letter.

Shared offices wait until December 1st, because a coworker didn't sign up for this and can't leave. That's got its own ruling.

The season closes January 1st. You've had five weeks. You're allowed to like a song in February, but you'll need to keep that between you and your car.

The Ruling: Allowed from the day after Thanksgiving through January 1.

The day after Thanksgiving falls on Friday, November 27, 2026, then Friday, November 26, 2027, then Friday, November 24, 2028. Thanksgiving is always the fourth Thursday of November, so this date moves every year.
