The Court OfYuletide Timing

When Should I Wrap Christmas Presents?

Any time from November 15th to December 24th. The two weekends before Christmas are the best bet, and sooner is fine if you label everything.

Wrap too early and you'll spend December 23rd finding a present from November in the linen closet, under a present from last year. The Court has seen the linen closet. That's the only real risk with early wrapping: you take the one thing that told you what was in the box, and you cover it with paper.

So label as you go. Write the name and what's inside on a little list or a sticky note on the inside of the closet door. If there are kids in the house, use a code on the gift tags, or use a different paper for each person and keep the key to yourself. Kids can read a tag. They can also shake a box and do math.

Wrap in batches. It's a lot easier in an evening with a clear table than at 1 a.m. on the 24th, on the floor, using packing tape, with your knees telling you things. Keep your scissors, tape and paper in one bag, because they will otherwise be in three different rooms. Measure the paper by rolling the box across it once, and you'll stop wasting so much.

Do it behind a closed door, at night, like all crimes.

By the 24th it's over. You're out of tape. Use the comics section. Everyone will think you meant it.

The Ruling: Allowed from November 15 through December 24.
